Altamease
Mckenzie
Jul 26, 1931 — Mar 17, 2025
Apopka
Mrs. Altamease McKenzie was born on July 26,1931 in Geneva, FL to the late Ira Bell Stewart and the late Leroy Detreville. In her early years she attended Geneva Elementary and later graduated from Crooms High School in 1950. In 1951 she met and married the late Eddie E. McKenzie. She worked as a housekeeper for various families for many years before retiring. During a brief stay in Rigby, Idaho, she also worked in a nursing home before returning to Geneva.
Altamease's walk with God began at the age of 13 when she joined New Bethel AME Church in her hometown of Geneva. She remained a devout Christian and devoted member all of her life serving as Church Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Stewardess, Missionary President, Steward, Deaconess, and Steward Pro-Temp. Throughout the years she was instrumental in the upkeep and survival of New Bethel and strengthening its relationship with surrounding churches in the community.
As a descendant of one of the first African American families to settle in Geneva, Altamease was a pillar in the community and was loved by many. Her devotion to her family, her church, and her community was shown in every aspect of her life. Altamease departed this life on March 17, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; her sister, Bertha Mae Holt; daughters, Betty Ann Perry, Rhonda Lou Gibson, and stepdaughter, Eddie Lee Harris. She leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her life and legacy: her sister, Dorothy Salary, Haines City; son, Edward McKenzie, Geneva; Verlesia McKenzie, Apopka; and stepson, Leonard Cotton (Phyllis), Deltona; 14 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
