Kenneth L.
Johnson
Apr 12, 1951 — Dec 4, 2021
Camilla
Kenneth "KJ" Johnson loved and served his country. He was a decorated Sergeant First Class in the US Army from 1971-1994. KJ was a 2-time Vietnam Combat Veteran and received the Combat Expert Military badge as well as being awarded 16 medals to recognize his achievements. His most prestigious assignment was being elected to the 3rd US infantry in Arlington, VA as a member of the Old Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. KJ was a faithful member of Camilla United Methodist Church. He loved his Church family & could often be found volunteering in the kitchen for church & community projects.
KJ has been involved with the Mitchell County Food Bank where he helped serve thousands of residents who were suffering from hunger. Kj was one of the founding members of Stitches for Mitchell County. Starting this organization as a spay and neuter operation, he worked to thwart the overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats in our community.
Later KJ was instrumental in expanding this organization to include animal control and animal shelter operations. KJ served as President of this organization and led Stitches to be a testament on how animals are to be treated. KJ was responsible for leading the charge of getting many animals either adopted or sent to rescues in neighboring states, traveling as far north as Atlanta and as far south as Cocoa Beach, FL.
Sweet Orlando's BBQ was another venture headed and owned by KJ. He came to Camilla and served his wonderful BBQ at local festivals and events. KJ lent his talents to Stitches in that area as well, grilling some of the best chicken ever! To express his appreciation, he often thanked his health care providers with his famous cooking. KJ was always known to help Sanders and Company,
The thing that was made the most impact on our citizens, coming from KJ was his heart and his love for people. Always willing to lend a hand, offering words of encouragement or giving whatever, someone needed, KJ was there!
