Obituary

Elizabeth Washington was born to Willie and Ella Hubbard on December 4, 1917 in Pocomoke City, Maryland. She was one of five children. When she was five years old, her father moved the family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and she attended public schools. She won a talent show when she as in her twenties and she became an entertainer. She traveled with a trio of female dancers that performed in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. Some years later, she married Booker T. Washington and became the mother of two daughters and one son. She gained a reputation for being an outstanding cook and she found work in a popular restaurant in West Philadelphia. On January 1, 2000, she moved to Lake Mary, Florida with her daughter. She transferred her church membership from Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Philadelphia, PA, where she worked in the Missions Ministry, serving on the sick and visiting the shut-in. She was considered a Mother of New Life Word Center Church by her wonderful Pastor, the late Dr. Ronald W. Merthie, whose Bible-based teachings helped to extend her life to 101 years that were full of with spiritual enrichment, travel, and happy times with family and friends. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter Bonita McClendon (Leroy) in Lake Mary, FL; son Barry Washington in Philadelphia, PA; two nephews Robert Brown and Tyronne Clements in Philadelphia, PA; plus 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Her daughter Deborah Spraggins of Philadelphia, PA preceded her in death.
