The Sunrise began for Sterling Garfield Staggers on November 12, 1943 in Ocala Fl to the parents of Ike Staggers and Eula Mae Staggers, who preceded Sterling in death. Sterling attended Marion County Schools and was a proud graduate of Howard High School Class of 1962.

After high school Sterling began his professionals journey. Sterling's journey began with the United Postal Service in Manhattan, NY.  After returning to Ocala, FL. Sterling attended Marion County Community College, Sterling began his career with Florida State Dept. of Corrections. Sterling worked several positions within Florida Dept. of Corrections. He became the first African American Warden working in Sumter and Pasco Counties.

Sterling was a very faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he also served on the Board of Trustees. He was active in the Adult Choir where he enjoyed singing Songs of Praise.

Sterling has been acknowledged professionally by Governor Lawton Childs and Rep. Alzo Reddick.  He was a lifetime member of the NAACP. He loved his family, friends and well respected by all that knew him.  He was very humble, friendly, thoughtful, kind, yet firm with his love.
