Obituary

On June 23, 1955, Willie C. Stephens Sr. was born in Orlando, Florida to his loving parents Sister Lena Louise Woodson Stephens and Brother Nathaniel Stephens Sr. (Founding Trustee of New Bethel AME Church Orlando).  He was the youngest child of his parents' union.

Raised in Orlando, Willie C. graduated from Evans High School where he played the drums and was a proud Trojan alum.  After high school, his career as a truck driver allowed him to visit every state and he knew the US highways like the back of his hand.

In the late 1980s, Brother Stephens was called to ministry at True Deliverance Church on Ivey Lane where he served for many years. Afterwards, he was instrumental in the planning and launching of Trinity Freewill Missionary Baptist Church in Orlando. It was his passion to get people saved, and he would often ask, "Do you have your ticket?", as he eagerly shared the gospel of Christ with others.

Willie C. was also a hard-working husband, family man, and music lover.  He further pursued his interest in music as a popular local disc jockey nicknamed DJ Candyman. DJ Candyman was beloved by all who knew him for his great songs, generosity, and sense of humor. He enjoyed making people laugh and having a good time.

Willie C. was preceded in death by his father, Brother Nathaniel Stephens, Sr., his mother, Sister Louise Stephens, and two brothers, Jimmy Stephens, and Elijah Stephens.

He leaves behind his devoted wife Sandra Stephens, his loving children: Monica Stephens, Willie Stephens Jr. (Janelle), Talena Stephens Jones (Charles), Tiona Chambers (Jimmie Chambers Jr.) and Sheena Hampton-Johnson (Temika).  He also leaves behind his adoring grandchildren: Dondrick Brown, Zamya Juste, Mikael Spencer (Jarajah), Savannah Stephens, Yallery Stephens, Jimmie Chambers III, and Zo Kubota- Johnson.  His loving siblings are: Nathanial Stephens Jr (Glinder), Lena Louise Stephens Wilfalk, Tommy Stephens (Theresa), Mary Louise Stephens Mack, and Rev. Dr. Ida Jean Stephens Andrews. Willie C. also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews along with other caring relatives and friends.

On Tuesday October 31st, 2023, Willie C. earned his heavenly wings.  He passed away at Advent Health in Orlando, with his wife by his side. We take great comfort in knowing that he is now resting peacefully in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As he used to say, "love you always and forever", we will miss him dearly.
