Our Love & Dedication PART 1

Gail A. Thomas-DeWitt is the fifth child of six, born in Chattahoochee to the late Willard and Louise Thomas. At the tender age of 5, Gail knew early in life that she was compelled to help others. She was blessed with a giving and angelic spirit, and because of this spirit, she was always compelled to go out of her way to make others happy and to bring forth joy to each and every heart that she touched.
As a teenager, when most young adults were starting to mature and become career- and goal-oriented, many teachers insisted that higher education was essential and encouraged the young ladies to pursue careers in teaching, nursing, or law. Unlike other teenagers, Gail knew that a higher power had a calling upon her life. The careers that were suggested by teachers and counselors were not in the midst of any of her choices. God had a special calling on her life, and that was to create a beautiful and lasting memory for the families that she would serve with dignity, compassion, and kindness in a professional manner.
Gail knew that she wanted a profession in the Mortuary business. She longed to assist and comfort others in times of need. After graduating from college she gained employment at Bruton's Funeral Home in Orlando, FL, and later returned to Chattahoochee to run Smith-Thomas Funeral Home. In 1995, she was elected the first and only African American woman to become Mayor of the City of Chattahoochee. She returned to Orlando in 1996 and purchased Bruton's Funeral Home, which is now Gail & Wynn's Mortuary, Inc. Gail's love for the funeral profession led her to become a member of the National Disaster Operational Response Team (DMORT) in 1996 until the present. She proudly served as Chief of Morgue Operations. Gail has one son, Ryan DeWitt, a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. Ryan is a licensed Commercial Pilot with Delta Connection. They are members of St. Mark AME Church, Orlando, FL, where Gail serves as a Trustee.
One of Gail's ambitions was to become a member of the State Board of Funeral Services. On October 1, 2005, that dream became a reality when Gail was the first African American woman to serve on the newly formed State of Florida Board of Funeral Cemetery and Consumer Services, appointed by Governor Jeb Bush under the Dept. of Financial Services. It consists of ten members. Oct. 16, 2009; Gail was appointed as Vice-Chairman of the Board, while she serves her second term in office. February 2010: Gail was appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of The International Conference Examining Board for District 3 (AL, FL, GA, MI, NC, SC, Puerto Rico). The Conference is known as the premier source within its areas of expertise, the Examination Service Provider for the death care Profession, the recognized information resource clearinghouse for the death care profession and the public. She also served on the Science Committee of the International Conference Examining Board; this committee's chief responsibility is to review and write the National Conference Examination. Gail was appointed Sec./Treas for The International Conference in April 2011 and Vice-President Feb. 2012 and President Feb. 2013. Past President 2013-2015. Gail is a Certified Funeral Service Practitioner. June 2010, Gail was Honored as Professional of the Year by Epsilon Nu Delta Mortuary Fraternity. She was selected by her peers as Florida Mortician of the Year 2011. Humble with Thanks to God, Gail is grateful and realizes that dreams really come true. To God be the Glory for the things he has done!
